Oaks, PA – MRE Racing from Fitchburg, MA will have on display its prototype electric-powered Asphalt Late Model at the Pioneer Pole Buildings Motorsports Racecar & Trade Show on Saturday and Sunday, January 20th and 21st. The 37th annual event will again be held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.
Designed and built by Jay Maki, the car was raced at Hudson (NH) Speedway late last year and tested once, at Star (NH) Speedway. Maki said when he raced the car at Hudson, he was told in advance “not to pass anybody”. The Star test, however, was an eye-opener.
“I applied full power to the car to see what it would do annd I had to back off immediately, I was heading right for the first turn fence,” said Maki.
“I realized right then that the car would never be able to run at full power anywhere.”
The process of adaptation to an existing Late Model chassis involves the fairly simple task of welding in a few small braces and a change in motor plate. The changes are simple enough that if the car were to be changed back to a normally aspirated car, the bracing could be left in the car.
Maki will be available next to his race during the show to answer questions and talk racing. The show is open on Friday from 2 to 9PM. Saturday hours are 11 to 8 PM.
“My message to those who stop by our booth is, first, ‘don’t be afraid of electric powered vehicles’”, “ said Maki.
A continuous offering of informative racer seminars will make Motorsports Saturday a very important day for racers. Check out the recently released schedule on the show web-site.
